Ironhorse Music offers a variety of ensembles for elementary through high school students.
2020-2021 rehearsals are suspended indefinitely, but we plan to resume them as soon as it is deemed safe for our students, our instructors, and the community.
Ironhorse Youth Orchestra (IYO) – 3:30-4:30 pm, Fridays in the C.R. Anderson Middle School Orchestra Room
The Ironhorse Youth Orchestra continues to be our anchor ensemble. It is open to students of all ages and ability levels as long as they are willing to practice and attend rehearsals. The time was adjusted to allow high school students access to the majority of each rehearsal.
This ensemble plays repertoire for string orchestra, but it also performs a variety of symphonic orchestral works that include winds, percussion, and choir.
Ironhorse Winds and Percussion (IWP) – 3:30-4:30 pm, Fridays in the C.R. Anderson Middle School Band Room
As the youth orchestra expanded its repertoire beyond string ensemble literature, musicians from local band programs joined Ironhorse to help us explore symphonic music. As their role has developed, they explore chamber music and jazz standards outside the orchestral setting!
Ironhorse Camerata Orchestra (ICO) – 4:30-5:30 pm, Fridays in the C.R. Anderson Middle School Orchestra Room
With more students staying involved in Ironhorse Music past middle school (many of they with extensive playing experience), there is a clear need to provide additional challenges at the high school level. This ensemble is open to all high school students who would like an extra challenge, and is open by audition to younger players. The rehearsal time elides with Full Orchestra so students can continue to be involved as mentors to their younger aged peers.
This ensemble plays advanced repertoire for string orchestra and other chamber music by established composers.
Ironhorse Youth Chorus (IYC) – 5:00-6:00 pm, Mondays at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church
The Ironhorse Youth Chorus is a community choir in the Helena area, open to singers entering grades 1 – 8. The ensemble performs its own literature and along with songs that feature orchestral accompaniment.
