Ironhorse Music offers a variety of ensembles for elementary through high school students.
2020-2021 rehearsals were suspended through the fall semester, but staff have made a plan to resume string and percussion rehearsals in January. We hope wind and chorus rehearsals will follow, but keeping everything safe for students, instructors, and the community is our highest priority.
In the interest of health and safety, staff have assembled these protocols to guide rehearsal practices. Please review them prior to ensemble enrollment and share your questions or concerns with Mr. Cleary.
Ironhorse Youth Orchestra (IYO) – 4:00-5:00 pm, Fridays in the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church Sanctuary
The Ironhorse Youth Orchestra continues to be our anchor ensemble. It is open to students of all ages and ability levels as long as they are willing to practice and attend rehearsals. The time has been adjusted this year to accommodate a change of rehearsal venue.
This ensemble plays repertoire for string orchestra, but it also performs a variety of symphonic orchestral works that include winds, percussion, and choir.
Ironhorse Winds and Percussion (IWP) – 4:00-5:00 pm, Fridays in various locations
As the youth orchestra expanded its repertoire beyond string ensemble literature, musicians from local band programs joined Ironhorse to help us explore symphonic music. As their role has developed, they explore chamber music and jazz standards outside the orchestral setting. This year they are even trying to create a rock and funk band!
Ironhorse Camerata Orchestra (ICO) – 5:00-6:00 pm, Fridays in the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church Sanctuary
With more students staying involved in Ironhorse Music past middle school (many of they with extensive playing experience), there is a need to provide additional challenges at the high school level. This ensemble is open to all high school students who would like an extra challenge, and is open by audition to younger players. The rehearsal time elides with Full Orchestra so students can continue to be involved as mentors to their younger aged peers.
This ensemble plays advanced repertoire for string orchestra and other chamber music by established composers.
Ironhorse Youth Chorus (IYC) – 6:30-7:30 pm, Mondays in the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church Sanctuary
The Ironhorse Youth Chorus is a community choir in the Helena area, open to singers entering grades 1 – 8. The ensemble performs its own literature and along with songs that feature orchestral accompaniment.
